A Day at Thomas Land and Drayton Manor Park #TLExpansion

We were recently invited to Thomas Land at Drayton Manor Park for the launch event of the expansion of Thomas Land. We first went to Thomas Land last year for Thomas’ 3rd Birthday and we loved it so we had to go back again and see the three new rides and other attractions. The day started with the official opening of the expansion which has increased Thomas Land by 40% by Sir Topham Hat (The Fat Controller) and CEO of Drayton Manor Park, Colin Bryan from the top of the new Sodor Airport complex. Each of the rides were introduced in turn starting with the new ones,  Captain’s Sea Adventure, Flynn’s Fire & Rescue and Toby’s Tram Express with fireworks and confetti.

Next it was our turn to try the new rides. Thomas loved Flynn’s Fire & Rescue where you had to go up and down a fire engine’s ladder spraying water to put the fire out. It was great fun but you do get a bit damp! Thomas enjoyed Captain’s Sea Adventure as you could spray the people in the other boats with water and even people nearby the ride too. Unfortunately, Toby’s Tram Express had some technical difficulties on launch day so we were unable to try it. It did look very exciting though for the brief period it was working and we would like to go back soon to try this ride out. Stuart and Thomas had a go on the newly relocated Jeremy Jet’s Flying Academy which is now in prime position in front of the Sodor Airport complex. Blue Mountain Engines also has a new home in the corner of the expansion area and was liked by Thomas too. The new bandstand was in use and the complementary candyfloss, popcorn and ice cream added to lovely atmosphere during the #TLExpansion launch event. Thomas enjoyed the old-style fairground games and was very pleased when he won a large Thomas the Tank Engine toy on Hook A Duck with Daddy.

We next had lunch in the new cafe at the bottom of Sodor Airport before moving onto explore the rest of Thomas Land. Thomas enjoyed the Bertie Bus ride so much that he went on it twice! He also enjoyed Winston’s Whistle-Stop Tours which give a great view of Thomas Land and the rest of Drayton Manor Park while you are going round. Thomas was not big enough to go on Cranky Crane or Troublesome Trucks so we will have to wait for the excitement from these rides when Thomas is a bit taller. Next we decided to go on Thomas, Rosie & Percy Engine Tours as it was something we could all enjoy as a family. While we were queuing, we saw The Fat Controller and the Engineer dancing above the station, entertaining the children below. Thomas and Daniel loved it! Soon we got on Percy in Knapford station in the centre of Thomas Land and went on our journey.

When we arrived at Farmer McColl’s Farm, Thomas and Daniel were both very pleased to look around the zoo, walk around the Dino Trail and play on Spencer’s Outdoor Adventure Play Area. We arrived in the zoo for Gibbon and Lemur feeding time which was great as the zookeeper brought them up close and we were told lots of information about the animals. Thomas was pleased to discover that there was a gibbon named after him and he was very cheeky and liked jumping round lots too. We also saw Meerkats (Daniel’s favourite) and Black Leopards. Thomas was disappointed to discover that he was not tall enough to go on Terence’s Driving School but he enjoyed the Discover Thomas Exhibit instead and liked watching Thomas moving round Sodor. Daniel and Thomas loved the Dino Trail with Daniel calling them all ‘this’ or ‘that’. Stuart and I struggled to get them off Spencer’s Outdoor Adventure Play Area as they were having so much fun!

All too soon, it was time to get Thomas The Tank Engine back to the main part of Thomas Land and head home. We had a lovely day at Thomas Land and Drayton Manor Park and we really hope we can visit again soon!
